This language, called Mòcheno, is considered by linguists as a phoneme of Middle-High Bavarian origin, imported by the German settlers known as Roncadori. They settled along the banks of the Fersina stream, in a narrow inlet between the mountains in the southeastern part of Trentino, at the northernmost end of the Valsugana.

The limited exchange with the outside world by the valley’s inhabitants has favored self-sufficiency and allowed the language to continue living in its original form over the years.

Influences from Italian, particularly from the Trentino dialect and surrounding areas such as Perginese and Pinetano, as well as from Tyrolean, are considered relatively recent.
